TotalEnergies and Air Liquide to produce low-carbon hydrogen
The decarbonisation of the industrial area is underway in Normandy. Air Liquide will take over and operate a TotalEnergies platform as part of a long-term contract. The hydrogen production unit, with a capacity of 255 tonnes/day, will be connected to Air Liquide’s hydrogen network which will enable to optimize its performance and thus develop the world’s first low-carbon hydrogen network.
Besides, the two companies will launch studies to develop a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project to decarbonize the hydrogen produced by the Normandy platform unit. Air Liquide will install its Cryocap process to capture CO2 (up and running in Port-Jérôme since 2015) and TotalEnergies will take care of the transport and storage of the CO2 especially through the CCS projects developed in the Northern Lights (Norway) and Aramis (Netherlands) North Sea.
This cooperation between Air Liquide and TotalEnergies is part of their common objective to contribute to decarbonising the industrial activities of the Seine Axis. To that end, both partners have signed a memorandum of understanding, alongside other industrialists and announced in July 2021, to develop a CO2 capture and storage infrastructure in Normandy of which the aim is to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 3 million tonnes per year by 2030.
