Hydrogen to propel ships in Brittany
NOE project : sounds like Noah’s ark, but this means zero emission ship (Navire Zero Emission in french). This project is conducted by Barillec, a Concarneau-based company in Britanny (west coast of France). It is currently under review at the R&D cluster Sea Britanny Atlantic and aims to propel ships by equipping them with hydrogen fuel cells to power electric engines. The technology used is the one supplied by SymbioFCell for EV with range extenders on french mail service cars.
The time line is 5 years, once the project is validated: 2 years to design the system and for testing on shore, 2 more to build a 35 passenger ship and 1 more for additional testing on sea for Penn Ar Bed cruising company. Barillec is confident and thinks that France should use alternative energies for ships.
Hydrogen will come from renewable energies thanks to marine current power. It will be supplied by Sabella company near Ouessant. Extra power will help to fuel the NOE projet.
