A 3 years waiting list before having a Toyota Mirai

If you want a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, and you’re not a VVIP, the dealer could tell you “after 2018”. But who could imagine that some customers would have to wait for three years for a Toyota, and not a sport car but a fuel cell sedan ?

The waiting list for the Toyota Mirai is due to production limitations.

The Mirai is Toyota’s first production hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, and is currently almost completely built by hand by artisan engineers at its former LFA Works facility at the Motomachi Plant in Toyota City, Japan. Consequently, production costs are high and production volumes low.

This year, Toyota aims to build 700 vehicles for Japan, the U.S. and Europe. Next year, that will rise to 2,000. By 2017, it will be raised further to 3,000 cars per year.

Toyota has already a significant order book. Even if it’s made up of mainly governmental and corporate customers, and a limited number of private buyers, this is an interesting fact. Hydrogen technology is awaited by much more people than expected.
