As we mentioned earlier, the new gigawatt electrolyser factory of Siemens Energy and Air Liquide was officially inaugurated today, November 8, in Berlin*.

With the new factory, Siemens Energy is making electrolysers a mass product, available in large quantities and at competitive prices. The factory has an initial capacity of one gigawatt, with plans to reach at least three gigawatts by 2025. With installed electrolysis capacity of 3GW, an average of 300,000 metric tons of green hydrogen can be produced per year. More specifically, the gigawatt electrolyser factory will supply stacks based on uses proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology.

This partnership benefits from the expertise of both Air Liquide and Siemens as well as their pipelines. In Europe, a number of low-carbon and renewable large-scale hydrogen projects are already under development. This is the case near Port-Jérôme, in France, where Air Liquide is working on the Normand’Hy project. A 200 MW electrolyser which will prevent the emission of 250,000 tons of CO2 per year. The Normand’Hy project will be one of the first to be supplied from Siemens Energy’s new electrolyser production facility in the framework of the joint venture between Air Liquide and Siemens Energy. The latter is also working on several other large-scale electrolyser projects, such as in Kassø (Denmark) or FlagshipONE (Sweden), which will provide hydrogen for the synthesis of efuels for shipping.
