The European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and the Environment (CINEA) is supporting studies for the H2med project under the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility), a mechanism to promote interconnection across Europe.
The €35 million released by Europe for the H2med project will be split between two separate initiatives:
- €28.3 million for the BarMar section (Barcelona–Marseille): This funding will cover part of the engineering studies, including marine and environmental reconnaissance campaigns.
- €7.2 million for the CelZa section (Portugal–Spain interconnection): This will finance the basic and detailed engineering phases for the hydrogen pipeline and compressor station.
These links have already been selected under the IPCEI.
Another Step Forward
The awarding of these funds from the CEF (known as MIE in French) demonstrates not only the technical progress of the project but also the corridor’s key role in the future European hydrogen economy. The next step will be to apply for a new call for tenders under the auspices of the MIE before making the final investment decision.
Last December in Madrid, the project’s promoters* launched the H2med Alliance. On that occasion, a memorandum of understanding was signed between representatives of the German and Spanish governments, the five transmission system operators, and other companies across the entire value chain.
