While France hesitates, countries like Spain are accelerating their efforts. Spanish energy producer Enagás is making hydrogen its primary growth driver.
The contrast is striking. As part of its 2025-2030 strategic plan, Enagás will invest €4.035 billion by the end of the decade, with €3.125 billion allocated to the development of renewable hydrogen infrastructure. The company highlights that it has already completed the design of Spain’s hydrogen backbone and plans to make the final investment decision by the end of 2027.
Additionally, the call for expressions of interest for the H2med European corridor, the results of which were presented by Enagás on 10 February alongside operators NaTran, Teréga, REN, and OGE, saw strong participation. A total of 528 projects were submitted by 168 companies. These results solidify H2med as the most advanced hydrogen corridor in Europe.
Hydrogen to Overtake Gas
Enagás has also secured 100% of the funding requested from the European Interconnection Mechanism (EIM) to carry out studies for its Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) within the H2med corridor. The development of the Spanish hydrogen backbone, including associated storage, is valued at €75.8 million. The company is also working on an extension, with an additional 1,480 kilometres of route, estimated to require a gross investment* of €2.135 billion.
Enagás estimates that by 2030, its hydrogen assets will surpass its natural gas assets.
*This investment is not included in the strategic update, as it will take place after 2030.
