A waste collection vehicle powered by a fuel cell in Berlin

The Berlin waste management company (BSR) is testing at the moment a fuel cell, in order to make waste collection more energy efficient and quieter.  The solution has been applied on a truck, that will run for 24 months.

Thanks to the fuel cell, garbage collection is electrically powered. At that time, the diesel engine of the vehicle is turned off, avoiding particles and nitrogen oxides. The fuel consumption of the waste collection vehicle is reduced up to 30 %.

The project is carried out in cooperation with the Berlin Company Heliocentris Energiesysteme GmbH and the assembly manufacturer FAUN. The German Federal Ministry of Transportation supports the development of the prototype under the National Innovation Program Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP) with about 800,000 Euro.
