Air Liquide has secured a €110 million grant from the European Innovation Fund for its groundbreaking ENHANCE project at the port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium.
This project marks the first European industrial-scale initiative for producing and distributing low-carbon and renewable hydrogen using ammonia* as a feedstock. By substituting natural gas with ammonia, the project aims to cut CO₂ emissions by over 300,000 tonnes annually.
Armelle Levieux, a member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee, highlighted the significance of the initiative: “The combination of ammonia cracking and hydrogen liquefaction technologies offers an additional solution to support the growth of the global hydrogen market.” She added, “We welcome the support from the European Commission for our ENHANCE project, which contributes to the emergence of a viable infrastructure for the supply of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen in Europe.“
Securing this funding represents a crucial milestone for Air Liquide as it paves the way for a final investment decision and the subsequent implementation of the ENHANCE project.
