The French group is stepping up its involvement in green hydrogen. It plans to build a unit in Oberhausen, Germany, to produce hydrogen by electrolysis from water and renewable electricity. The first section of this production unit, which will eventually have a capacity of 30 MW (megawatts), should be operational at the beginning of 2023.
The electrolyser will be connected to Air Liquide’s existing local pipeline infrastructure to supply key industries and mobility with renewable hydrogen in one of Germany’s most industrialized regions, North Rhine-Westphalia. Nearly 15 major industrial sites are already connected to this network nowadays.
This giant electrolyser will be the first to be built from Air Liquide’s partnership with Siemens Energy. The technological solution is PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) type. To enhance the implementation of this project, a public funding has been granted by the German Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy.
