Batteries: Ceres Power technology enters mass production in Korea

Doosan Fuel Cell has become the first partner of British company Ceres Power to begin mass production of its solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology. The initial units will be deployed for stationary applications in Korea, particularly in data centres.

Manufactured under licence at Doosan Fuel Cell’s state-of-the-art facility in Jeollabuk-do Province, production is set to begin before the end of the year. These SOFC systems, designed by Ceres, are more cost-effective and durable than existing solutions. They are capable of meeting the growing energy demands of data centres — a demand amplified by the rise of AI — as well as stabilising renewable energy-based grids and microgrids, powering buildings, and providing auxiliary power for marine transport.

“The start of mass production by Doosan Fuel Cell marks a significant step in making this technology available worldwide,” said Phil Caldwell, CEO of Ceres. Doosoon Lee, CEO of Doosan Fuel Cell, added: “By commercialising these technologies and promoting their domestic production, we aim to accelerate the global transition to a carbon-free society through environmentally friendly energy solutions.”

According to Ceres, licensed production allows its partners to save up to ten years in the development of SOFC technology. Its systems have already been tested for the equivalent of five million operating hours.
