Daimler Hydrogen-Powered Truck Boosted in Germany by IPCEI Hy2Tech
The German manufacturer has been given the green light by the state of Baden-Württemberg to deploy 100 hydrogen-powered trucks, aimed at decarbonising road transport.
While France remains hesitant, Germany is forging ahead. A new agreement has been reached as part of the Pegasus project, which falls under the IPCEI Hy2Tech initiative. In a recent press release, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Energy announced a €50 million funding allocation. “Green hydrogen is a crucial component for the climate-friendly future of the transport sector. Wherever battery-electric vehicles fall short, hydrogen presents an important alternative. This is particularly true for heavy transport,” explained Thekla Walker, the Minister for the Environment and Energy.
The project, also supported by Rhineland-Palatinate (€27 million) and the federal government (€158 million), will allow hydrogen-powered trucks to be tested on a large scale. Daimler Truck will be able to deploy around 100 fuel-cell trucks for long-haul transport, which will be tested under real-world conditions at various locations, including the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, Mannheim, and Gaggenau plants in Baden-Württemberg, as well as at Wörth in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Thanks to its liquid hydrogen solution, the manufacturer offers a range of over 1,000 km on a single tank.
