Equinix to test hydrogen for a data center in Ireland

Equinix, the world’s number 1 digital infrastructure company, has announced a trial in Ireland with electricity supplier ESB and green energy producer GeoPura. They will be using a fuel cell as a backup generator in Dublin.

Equinix is the partner of all the big names in Tech, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, the Zoom video conferencing service and Netflix. Protecting the environment is one of the company’s priorities, as this note from the Vice-President in charge of sustainability attests.

It was Peter Lantry, the Managing Director of Equinix in Ireland, who announced the collaboration with ESP and GeoPura, in a post on LinkedIn. A container housing a fuel cell and hydrogen will therefore be connected to the Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data center. The solution represents an alternative to conventional generators and can help stabilise the electricity grid.

Peter Lantry says he is “incredibly proud to be at the forefront of a trial making use of this technology” and reminds us that Equinix is committed to sustainable digital infrastructure solutions.
