During the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam (one of the most prominent global events for the hydrogen industry), an award was presented to a hydrogen valley project in the Netherlands—one in which Haffner Energy, a French technology company, plays a key technical role.
The Renewable Energy Valley in Alkmaar (a coastal town located about 80 km north of Amsterdam) is part of the REFORMERS initiative, a Horizon Europe-funded programme supporting the development of sustainable hydrogen ecosystems. The Alkmaar project received recognition in the “Clean Project” category for its contribution to clean energy innovation.
Haffner Energy is involved through its patented Hynoca® process, one of two hydrogen production technologies selected for the project. The Hynoca® system will convert 6,500 tonnes of locally sourced biomass residues—with no conflict of use—into 240 tonnes of mobility-grade hydrogen per year. This clean hydrogen will help meet local needs in transport and industry, while avoiding the emission of 2,880 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
“We are delighted that our international collaboration to create a decentralised hydrogen ecosystem has been recognised today,” said Joep Sanderlink, Project Manager at the New Energy Coalition (a Dutch energy transition organisation) and Coordinator of the Alkmaar Renewable Energy Valley.
Haffner’s presence in the Netherlands is represented through a local partner, which has established HYNOCA-Alkmaar.BV, the regional entity overseeing deployment. Beyond the Netherlands, Haffner’s biomass- and organic waste-based hydrogen solution is also being rolled out in Luxembourg, Belgium, and North Rhine-Westphalia (a western German state) by Busser Project & Technology Development.
