Toyota has brought a hydrogen-powered pizza oven to the Dreux circuit. It had already been used in Tokyo for the Japan Mobility Show. However, this is the first time it has been seen in France.
Cédric Borremans, Toyota Motor Europe’s Head of the Olympics division, gave us the tip-off. But being aware of the animation does not make it less impressive. And it was a hit! Toyota collaborated with the Japanese firm Rinnai, which has been existing since 1920 and specialises in ovens and heating products. In 2022, the company developed a hydrogen-powered water heater. And as part of Woven City, the city of the future that Toyota is building at the foot of Mount Fuji, Rinnai is working on hydrogen cooking methods.
The oven on display at Dreux is part of this strategy. It emits less CO2, but there’s more. When it comes into contact with oxygen, the combustion of hydrogen generates steam that enhances the flavour of the food. Whereas charcoal dries out the ingredients, hydrogen combustion preserves the sauce which makes the pizza tastier. Tested and approved. It also works with vegetables and croissants.
Alongside its pizza oven, the Japanese manufacturer is also offering a hydrogen-powered barbecue. It can be used to cook a wide variety of food. Although the products on display are not yet available, guests are treated to a buffet that uses more conventional cooking methods. But between hydrogen pizza and ice creams delivered by a cargo bike embarking hydrogen capsules, Toyota is going beyond mobility solutions and is hinting at domestic uses of hydrogen.
