Hydrogen Trains: Siemens Back in the Race in Germany

This weekend, Siemens introduced its Mireo Plus H hydrogen train in several regions across Germany. Hot on the heels of Alstom, Siemens is reaffirming its position in the hydrogen rail sector with this innovative technology.

For those who thought hydrogen trains were off the tracks, think again. The technology is thriving, with new trains now operational in Berlin and Bavaria. Siemens’ Mireo Plus H offers a range of 1,200 km and a maximum speed of 160 km/h, all while operating in zero-emission mode.

Sustainable Rail Innovation in Germany

Through a partnership with NEB (Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn Betriebsgesellschaft), Siemens has deployed seven Mireo Plus H trains on the Heidekrautbahn line, connecting Berlin and Brandenburg. This initiative is expected to save over one million litres of diesel annually and reduce CO2 emissions by 3,000 tonnes. To further support sustainability, the trains are powered by hydrogen produced locally.

In Bavaria, the Mireo Plus H—nicknamed Freistaat Bayern (Free State of Bavaria)—is replacing diesel trains starting this week. This two-and-a-half-year pilot project will test hydrogen trains on selected rail routes, including the Allgäu-Lechfeld and Ammersee-Altmühltal corridors. Siemens Mobility highlights Bavaria’s long-term goal of phasing out diesel by 2040.

Siemens’ Commitment to Clean Rail Solutions

“We are offering electric, battery-powered, and hydrogen trains built on the state-of-the-art Mireo platform. The development of our Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains remains on schedule,” said André Rodenbeck, Head of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility. “We are proud to play a role in the shift away from diesel trains. This transition reduces CO2 emissions while providing Germans with powerful, comfortable, and environmentally friendly rail options,” he added.
