Unlike Europe, Asia—China in particular—is ramping up its commitment to hydrogen mobility. One Chinese province has set ambitious targets: 100 refuelling stations and 10,000 hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2030.
Jiangsu, a coastal province in eastern China, is one of the country’s most populous and technologically advanced regions, with an economy comparable to that of Mexico or Australia. It has recently unveiled a hydrogen industry development plan for 2025-2030, outlining the deployment of 10,000 vehicles and around 100 refuelling stations.
As an industrial powerhouse, Jiangsu produces 118 million tonnes of steel and 1.6 million vehicles annually. The province also generates significant quantities of by-product hydrogen, making it well-positioned to integrate hydrogen applications. Under China’s national hydrogen strategy (2021-2035), Jiangsu aims to establish itself as a key hydrogen hub, covering the entire value chain—from production and storage to distribution, component manufacturing, and vehicle production.
Clearly, China is moving forward with hydrogen mobility with far fewer doubts than Europe.
