While the national strategy reaffirms support for the electrolysis sector, it also makes a brief mention of natural hydrogen.
Tucked away in a short paragraph at the end of the chapter on hydrogen hubs, the document states: “To ensure that all potential avenues are explored, the government has launched an exploratory study into native hydrogen, focusing on its resources, feasibility in France, economic potential, and environmental impact.” The results of this study are expected to be published in early 2025.
As previously reported, the first research permit has already been granted in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region to TBH2 Aquitaine, with other applications currently under review. “France aims to position itself as a pioneer in this emerging energy source, which may also be available within the country,” the strategy document notes.
“Unlocking the potential of France’s subsoil is essential,” said Industry and Energy Minister Marc Ferracci in a recent interview with La Tribune Dimanche. He added: “Harnessing France’s underground resources—while adhering to European environmental standards—is a crucial step in reducing our dependence and sustaining the social model we’ve chosen, which is built on a bold ecological transition.”
