Meet4Hydrogen will take place on 24 and 25 September in Nancy, bringing together experts and stakeholders for a unique event dedicated to underground resources—particularly natural hydrogen, but also geothermal energy and lithium—alongside broader issues of energy sovereignty and geopolitics. The event is supported by the Grand Est Region, Greater Nancy, Destination Nancy and France Hydrogène.
One of the central questions underpinning the event is what links Greenland, Ukraine and France’s Grand Est region. All three are rich in underground resources. In the Grand Est, one area of growing interest is the potential presence of a significant natural hydrogen deposit. Researchers from the CNRS, Jacques Pironon and Philippe Donato, have identified high concentrations of hydrogen in a former mining basin. In response, La Française de l’Énergie has submitted a permit application to explore this potential further.
Natural hydrogen will feature prominently in the programme, with a dedicated roundtable bringing together leading voices from the sector. The discussion will include Yannick Peysson, Head of Research Programmes at IFPEN; Nicolas Pélissier, President of 45-8 ENERGY; Emmanuel Masini, CEO of Mantle8; Antoine Forcinal, CEO of La Française de l’Énergie; Christophe Hecker, CEO of NaturalHy and spokesperson for earth2; and Mikaa Blugeon-Mered, co-founder of the International Natural Hydrogen Alliance. In addition to the technological and economic aspects, the session will also address the issue of social acceptance, which is increasingly crucial as natural hydrogen moves closer to deployment.
The event will also explore underground resources more broadly, with contributions from the Géoressources laboratory, the REISOL research chair and the Lorraine Renewable Energy Association. A session will be dedicated to local initiatives, including the conversion of the Saint-Avold coal-fired power plant by Gazel Energie. ADEME will present its work on the link between water resources and electrolysis, underlining the importance of an integrated approach to energy and environment.
Infrastructure and cross-border hydrogen transport will also be key themes. Natran will present an update on the Hyfen corridor and major international projects such as Moshayc, which involves Verso Energy and a proposed hydrogen production site, and Rhyn, which includes the development of infrastructure to serve the Port of Strasbourg. These projects will be discussed in the wider context of hydrogen strategies in Germany, Luxembourg and Switzerland, as well as the broader Greater Region.
Another highlight will be the participation of Pierre-Étienne Franc from Hy24, who will share insights on the importance of connecting hydrogen production with pipeline networks, and will present his latest book. Hydrogen mobility will also be a major topic, with companies such as Hysetco, Hyliko, Solaris, Hopium, Namx, HRS and H2Gremm expected to take part, offering perspectives on the latest developments in vehicles, infrastructure and industrial strategy.
