A successful launch for the new Hyundai Nexo in Korea

On sale since May in South Korea, the new generation of Hyundai’s Nexo has already proved a success, with more than 1,000 units sold in July alone — a remarkable result in an otherwise sluggish market.

In its very first month, the new Nexo outperformed total sales for the first half of 2024 (725 units), representing a +203% increase compared with July last year. It is fair to speak of a genuine “Nexo effect”. While still far from the sales volumes of battery electric vehicles, this surge in demand for a hydrogen-powered model is noteworthy.

When unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show in the spring, Hyundai announced that cumulative sales of the Nexo had reached 37,000 units. The brand now aims to sell 13,000 units of the new model by the end of the year, which would bring the overall total to the symbolic milestone of 50,000. That would be a highly respectable achievement for a hydrogen fuel cell car.

Despite challenges and criticism, the Korean manufacturer is pressing ahead. Hyundai plans to showcase the new Nexo at an economic forum in Seoul and is continuing to expand its hydrogen mobility portfolio. Beyond passenger cars, this includes trucks and buses — with hydrogen-powered buses soon to be tested in Saudi Arabia as part of the NEOM “city of the future” project.
