A hydrogen hub for the Port of Stuttgart
Municipal electricity and gas supplier Stadwerke Stuttgart has received the go-ahead from its supervisory board to launch a hydrogen production plant. It will be connected to a pipeline to supply customers.
As part of the Green Hydrogen Hub Stuttgart (GH2S) project, four electrolysers with an installed capacity of up to 10 megawatts will produce up to 1,000 tonnes of hydrogen a year, exclusively from green electricity (generated by photovoltaic and wind power stations). Construction of the plant itself is due to start in early 2025, with commissioning scheduled for late 2026.
Production will be optimised using a digital twin of the system and AI control. You can find out more here (website in German).
The aim is to reach out all around the port of Stuttgart, offering hydrogen that can be used by buses and HGVs. Hydrogen will be transported via the GeNeSiS H2 pipeline (financed by the EU and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for the Environment and Climate), or by trailer in the Neckar valley.
This production site will also be able to supply fuel cell research companies. Stuttgart is one of Germany’s leading centres for mobility, with the ZSW (centre for solar energy and hydrogen research), as well as players such as Mercedes, Porsche and the equipment manufacturer Bosch.
