Ballard, the fuel cell supplier, will develop a hydrogen truck for mining logistics and transport along with a subsidiary of Adani. This will be a first in Asia.

The project will be led in India by AEL (Adani Enterprises Limited), a company focused on both mining operations and the construction of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. Ballard will integrate its 120kW FCmove fuel cell, in association with Ashok Leyland , one of the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles and buses. The hydrogen-powered mining truck will weigh 55 tonnes and have a range of 200 km, thanks to its three hydrogen tanks. It is to be released this very year.

The Adani Group is more involved than ever in green hydrogen. It had already announced its intention to invest more than 50 billion dollars over the next ten years, with a capacity of up to 3 million tonnes per year.

Vinay Prakash, director of Adani Enterprises Limited, said that “This experience of handling hydrogen as a fuel for commercial fleet not only prepones the advent of hydrogen technology for the mining and logistics sector in the country but will also enable other businesses to opt for long-term sustainable solutions transitioning fleets in ports, airports and in their industrial operations.” 

Ballard welcomes the project, which comes a year after it signed a memorandum of understanding with Adani. Both parties committed to exploring opportunities for the use of fuel cells in India in mobility and industry.
