Geely to develop green methanol for commercial vehicles

The Chinese car manufacturer, Geely, aims to develop a methanol based ecosystem in Handan town (Hebei province) through its brand Farizon Auto.

The group’s commercial vehicle brand is the first to explore the use of methanol. This division not only designs trucks adapted for this hydrogen-molecule derived use, but also takes part in the whole process, from production to distribution. For this purpose, the company signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Handan City, Ci county, Windey Energy Technology Group and China Merchants Taipingwan.

The aim is to set up a green methanol production site with a capacity of one million tonnes. Thanks to renewable energies (wind, solar), generating hydrogen and methanol, partners should be able to provide a network able to refuel zero-emission vehicles on the road as well as in ports.

The city intends to serve as a showcase for a green city and circular economy.
