Hydrogen trucks: a strong presence at the ACT Expo in Las Vegas

In addition to the Honda and Symbio hydrogen trucks, other players will be taking the stage as part of the ACT Expo. There will also be a workshop focused on hydrogen.

Hydrogen Today has already reported on Symbio, which is presenting a hydrogen-powered truck concept (a Freightliner Cascadia Class 8 road tractor, equipped with a 400 kW StackPack fuel cell and storing 70 kg of hydrogen), and the truck that Honda is also unveiling with three 80 kW fuel cells supplied by Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM), its joint venture with General Motors.

Hyundai will also be promoting hydrogen. The Korean brand is a partner in the NorCAL ZERO project, which will help to decarbonise road freight transport in the San Francisco Bay area and California’s Central Valley. It has deployed 30 units of the XCIENT Fuel Cell Class 8 with a 6×4 drive axle configuration in California, which has already been on the market since last year. This delivery marks the largest commercial deployment of a hydrogen truck in the United States.

Multi-energy platform at Volvo

At the show, Volvo will be unveiling the NL, a next-generation truck featuring a platform that can accommodate several types of energy, including batteries, fuel cells and combustion engines powered by e-fuels or hydrogen. Its subsidiary Volvo Penta will also be communicating on this subject. Darren Tasker, Vice-President in charge of sales at the American subsidiary, will be giving a speech on the global approach to decarbonisation, which also includes hydrogen.

The other newcomer is Cummins, which is launching a new generation of fuel cells through its Accelera brand. The 300 kW fuel cell will be on show at the ACT Expo, along with a Navistar RH International Class 8 truck equipped with two FCE150 engines and the company’s latest electric axle.

A hydrogen-dedicated workshop

It is worth noting that a workshop on the theme of hydrogen is scheduled for the first day. Among the speakers are Air Liquide (which will be talking about the hubs supported by the Biden administration), Daimler Truck (which will be leading a session on liquid hydrogen trucks with ExxonMobil and BayoTech), Woodside Energy, Air Products, Kenworth, Hyundai and cellcentric. Hydrogen will also be addressed in a session on off-road machinery (with Nuvera).

On 21 May, there will also be discussions on e-fuels with Bosch, Chevron and Shell.

The HGV industry is investing in batteries and hydrogen for a range of applications. At the show, Daimler is unveiling an electric and autonomous Freightliner eCascadia (level 4 on a 5-point scale). Hexagon Purus, known for its hydrogen tanks, is also a battery specialist. It is in this capacity that it is launching a joint venture with Hino Motors to launch electric trucks.
