Fuel cells: Chinese technology attracts automotive customers in Europe and the US

SHPT, a Chinese fuel cell manufacturer, has begun supplying samples to international markets. In Europe, they are currently being tested by automotive brands, while in the United States they are being used to support electric vehicle recharging.

So, is the hydrogen car really dead? Perhaps not. SHPT (Shanghai Hydrogen Propulsion Technology) has confirmed that its deliveries to Europe are linked to passenger car projects for major brands, although the names of the manufacturers have not been disclosed. Founded in 2018, the company regards this as recognition of the quality of its products, which have reportedly performed well in demanding conditions such as high altitudes and cold climates.

Its Prome P4L fuel cell is designed for use in both passenger cars and commercial vehicles, and has already been deployed across 18 provinces in China.

In the US, SHPT is collaborating with partners to develop mobile hydrogen refuelling solutions. Similar projects are also being considered in Switzerland, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates. Fuel cells could provide crucial support to battery-electric mobility — though it is a story that many EV-focused platforms may choose not to tell.
