A first hydrogen station opens on a highway in Germany
The first motorway hydrogen filling station has opened in Germany a few days ago. Operated by Total, it’s located on a service area in Geiselwind on the A3, between Würzburg and Nuremberg. This station links the existing filling facilities in the metropolitan regions of Frankfurt/Main, Stuttgart and Munich with each other, forming a hub for electric fuel cell vehicles in southern Germany.
The french oil company has invested 250 000 € in this filling station. By the way, Total is now operating 7 stations in Germany and could refuel more than 1 000 fuel cell vehicles with green hydrogen.
In fact, the Geiselwind site is part of the expansion plan launched in 2012 that will initially expand the German H2 network from its current 18 locations to 50 by the end of 2015. So that, it will be possible to travel nationwide with no fear of an empty tank. Other companies are participating to the construction of the hydrogen infrastructure, including Daimler and Linde that have already invested millions of euros.
