Toyota Motor Europe has signed an agreement with HRS and ENGIE to roll out a new generation of hydrogen refuelling systems, enabling heavy goods vehicles to refuel in under 10 minutes.
The Japanese manufacturer has made a significant breakthrough, halving refuelling times for 40-tonne trucks—now taking just 8 minutes for a 600 km range and 12 minutes for a 900 km range. For light commercial vehicles, refuelling is even faster, dropping to just 5 minutes. This achievement is made possible by Twin Mid Flow technology, which uses a dual-nozzle system with an increased flow rate. In addition to cutting refuelling times, this innovation is expected to help lower the cost of future hydrogen filling stations.
Under the agreement, Toyota will provide a test vehicle equipped with Twin Mid Flow technology, while HRS and ENGIE will develop next-generation hydrogen refuelling stations. The solution will undergo testing in Q4 as part of the EU-funded RHeaDHy project, which aims to accelerate the rollout of hydrogen distribution infrastructure.
“As project coordinator and as a research center with expertise in refueling simulation and refueling protocol, ENGIE is proud to join forces with Toyota Motor Europe and HRS leveraging on the RHeaDHy project,” said Quentin Nouvelot, head of the hydrogen mobility research program, ENGIE lab CRIGEN.
