China: hydrogen mobility is growing, but not fast enough
In the first half of the year, 2,410 hydrogen-powered vehicles were registered in the Middle Kingdom. A figure that Europe might envy, but one that falls short of Beijing’s expectations.
Admittedly, the year 2023 will set a new record. According to the CCAM, 3,367 vehicles were sold last year, and the momentum seems to be well underway to exceed 4,000 units. But, as the China Hydrogen newsletter points out, the hydrogen plan covering the period 2021/2035 forecasts a market of 50,000 vehicles by 2025. Even on the scale of China, volumes are still low. Only just over 14,700 vehicles have been sold since 2016.
Interact Analysis estimates that 18,892 vehicles were sold worldwide last year. While cars accounts for 90% of volumes, trucks will take the lead over the next few years. And China will be in a strong position. The firm’s forecasts put the market at 600,000 vehicles a year by 2030.
