At a show where the focus is on electric vehicles, the design studio is presenting the Enigma GT at Palexpo. This sleek concept is powered by a 2.5-litre V6 hydrogen engine.

Those who are familiar with the Geneva Motor Show (which last took place in 2019 before this risky return) know that the event is a benchmark for coachbuilders and that Pininfarina always puts on a show. For this 2024 edition, the Italian studio is showcasing a virtual concept. A GT with a combustion engine in a central position at the rear, paired with an electric motor at the front and connected to a 10 kWh battery. In the interest of technological neutrality, the designers and engineers opted for a 2.5-litre V6 engine powered by hydrogen.

According to the specification sheet, this combustion engine has a power output of 325 kW. The engine is powered by no less than 9 kg of hydrogen. That is enough to cover more than 700 km at 100 km/h and around 550 km on a hybrid cycle. However, that is certainly not the case when this GT, which features a 150 kW electric motor under the bonnet and can operate in 4-wheel drive mode, is used to its full potential. It can reach speeds of up to 250 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds.

Pininfarina has already showcased hydrogen-powered cars in Geneva

Primarily a design statement, featuring a great deal of technology, the Enigma GT is expected to be developed in time for the 95th birthday of Pininfarina in 2025. It’s worth pointing out that this is not the coachbuilder’s first attempt. The H2 Speed, presented in 2016 as part of a partnership with GreenGT, left quite an impression.

To date, hydrogen-powered vehicles designed by Pininfarina have relied heavily on fuel cells. The use of the hydrogen engine reflects the industry’s concerns. It is also the solution now opted for by Namx, whose SUV was designed by the Italian studio.

Today, the company’s CEO, Silvio Pietro Angori, will be taking the stage at the Auto Future forum as part of the show’s VIP day.
