A successful trial version of power-to-H2-to-power 

The Hyflexpower* consortium is delighted with the success of an industrial-scale Power-to-H2-to-Power demonstrator in the French department of Vienne.

This programme, which is located at the Smurfit Kappa paper mill in Saillat-sur-Vienne, becomes the first industrial site in the world to introduce an built-in hydrogen demonstrator.

The aim of this project is to clearly demonstrate that green hydrogen can be used as a flexible means of energy storage which can then be used to power a high-powered industrial turbine. The hydrogen is produced on-site with an electrolyser and used in a gas turbine with a mixture of 30% hydrogen and 70% natural gas by volume for electricity production.

The project marks the implementation of the world’s first industrial-scale Power-to-H2-to-Power demonstration with an cutting edge turbine with high levels of hydrogen. The next trials of the Hyflexpower project are planned for the summer of 2023 to increase the hydrogen levels to 100%.

*Stakeholders involved in the project are ENGIE Solutions, Siemens Energy, Centrax, ARTTIC, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the universities NTUA Athens (Greece), Lund (Sweden), Duisburg-Essen (Germany) and UCL (UK). The project is receiving significant funding from the European Commission, with two-thirds of the €15.2 million investment coming from the EU’s Horizon 2020 framework programme for research and innovation.
