GAC ERA: a Chinese hydrogen-powered SUV

Auto Guangzhou 2023

At the Auto Guangzhou 2023, GAC unveiled a hydrogen concept car in the shape of an SUV coupé. The car boasts over 500 hp and a range of 800 km.

What a surprise! In a country where manufacturers swear by battery electric vehicles, GAC Motor* took advantage of the Auto Guangzhou 2023 to present a hydrogen-powered concept car. Built on the group’s latest multi-energy platform architecture, the ERA concept features a hydrogen fuel cell and electric engines at the front and the rear, delivering 540 hp. It boasts an impressive range of over 800 km.

Why this unexpected U-turn towards hydrogen in China? Well, the Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou is working really hard on the subject. It wants to take the lead in China in this field, and aims to deploy no fewer than 2,500 fuel cell vehicles by 2025. It is also planning to install 50 hydrogen refuelling stations. The aim is to produce around 30,000 tonnes of hydrogen a year within the city and import a further 10,000 tonnes.

The subsidies should be of interest to carmakers. Actually, this is not GAC’s first attempt. It has already presented the Aion LX Fuel Cell with a range of 650 km, as well as the Space concept van in 2022.
